The fluttering Sakura. Spring - a season of blessing for new encounters. Chizuru Yukimura knocks on the gates of a private academy, which has always been a boys' school. However, as of this year, Hakuou Academy opens its gates to co-education and Chizuru is the only female student enrolled. Thus begins her first year.
Hakuoki Sweet School Life is an otome game made for the PS Vita, and is one of the best otoge I've ever played. Unfortunately, it's heavy on language in the mini games and I hardly know any Japanese so my enjoyment of the game was not to its fullest :(
Hakuoki SSL is a spin-off of Hakuoki, featuring the main characters of Hakuoki: Edo Blossoms as high school students/teachers at Hakuo Academy, and Chizuru as the only female at the school. It's such a gacha life premise but it's incredibly funny and fun to play!!
Hakuoki SSL features 9 romanceable protagonists from the main games, including my beloved Chikage, the head of the student council. In SSL, Chizuru lives alone and estranged from her younger brother, Kaoru, who goes to the same school, and her father is working abroad. It follows Chizuru during her first year at Hakuo Academy.
In my opinion, Hakuoki SSL is an amazingly written game and really cute, with the same strengths as Hakuoki's mainline series. However, it's so hard to beat!! I admittedly haven't even finished a single route in the game due to how difficult the 5th chapter's minigame is, which really bugs me. But I would totally reccomend it if you want a quick and cute slice-of-life otoge. There's so many love interests and they're all just as interesting as they are in the mainline games.

Kazama Chikage
love interest of choice...
kazama chikage.. my glorious king. as a forewarning, SSL kazama is not at all the same as kyoto winds/main game kazama, because of the modern and silly tone of ssl. regardless, he is undoubtedly
my favorite love interest of all time; i've said this abt a lot of LIs but with kazama i really do mean it. in ssl, kazama is a ridiculous, over the top guy whos constantly calling the player his wife
despite the two being high schoolers and her never showing any interest in him which is soo silly. none of his (two) friends take him seriously and they constantly talk to the player in private to
apologize for kazama's behavior. he thinks of himself as so much better than the other students of the academy (which is somewhat fair considering he comes from a really rich family), and is also beefing
with one of the teachers which is so silly I LOOOVE HIM
Chizuru is determined to find her father amidst the drama of Kyoto in the Bakumatsu period.
She romances the famous samurai of the Shinsengumi as she uncovers their dark secrets and comes face to face with the
mysteries of her past.
Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds is an otome game released in Japan in 2015 for the PS Vita. I play it on my PS Vita (thanks facebook marketplace) and at first I was totally against the game, but gradually I fell in love with it.
The story is set in Kyoto, circa the late 1800s, and follows the player-insert/protag Chizuru as she travels from Edo to Kyoto to search for her father. She dresses as a male to avoid getting into trouble, but one day she witnesses a murder by the Shinsengumi. Upon being saved, she's taken back to their headquarters and ends up joining the Shinsengumi. However, due to being a female, Chizuru is forced to disguise herself as a male and only reveals her true identity to the Shinsengumi who she has met.
The game features 12 love interests, my favorite of which being Kazama Chikage. Honestly, the cast of LI's is the most diverse out of any otoge, beating Norn9 and Collar x Malice for me; It's rare for me to like more than just one character in an otoge, and I have four favorites in Hakuoki.
Hakuoki: Kyoto Winds is widely regarded as a good starting point for getting into otoge within the community, and I can see why; It's well written, and each character is unique and 3 dimensional in their own way. The vibe of the game is also incredible, with the backgrounds looking like watercolor paintings and each sprite being drawn really well if you ignore heisuke. They use pencil lineart for the sprites which is genius and really sells the setting. God i love this game so dearly
