A proposal within five seconds of meeting!?
The mysterious handsome men who appeared in front of Hibari, the only daughter of distinguished Toujou family, were the groom candidates who had been sent by her natural enemy, her grandfather.
Alerted by her intuition Hibari realized that there must be something more behind this.
Why now? And anyway, who are these guys in the first place?
The four men try to pursue her in many ways, aiming for the groom position.
variable barricade was nothing short of a ride and not necessarily an enjoyable one at all times; i began the game really, really
loving it because it was so funny and the li's were all so unique. for that reason alone i'll immediately say, with all my heart, that
if you can, you should play variable barricade. even if you dont care about otome games, the opening chapter is really funny and it's
genuinely so one of a kind in every way possible. i don't think there are any other otoge that can even somewhat be compared to vb.
enough glazing; to give an introduction to the game, basically you're hibari (in the eng patch on vita you cant change her name), a super rich girl whos the heir to a wealthy business of some kind; it's never really said what the business is. but moving on. one day you get proposed to by 4 guys and you end up being forced to live in a house with all of them + your butler as they try to court you. they were all appointed by your grandfather to be your suitors, which you find strange because they're all unemployed with really big flaws.
it's really funny off the bat– hibari does NOT fuck with any of the suitors which i understand bc id be pissed too if i had to live in a house with 4 unemployed men trying to marry me, and the suitors themselves are really funny. they're sort of plays on typical otoge archetypes (to the point ive been tempted to write a blog post just breaking down the archetypes themselves if that makes sense)- the super gentlemanly, dreamy perfect husband guy (like aiji from cxm, lupin from c:r), the mysterious beautiful light haired twink (like kei from cxm or shikishima from baw), the butt of all the jokes (mineo, impey), and the nonchalant rude guy (sasazuka). but just played up to the extremes and heavily expanded upon. beyond that, though, i feel like the way they ended up writing each LI ended up making vb a game that really, really is perfect for girls with weird taste in men. like this is the only otoge ive played thus far with a masochistic puppyboy LI. also, the game forces you to become familiar with every LI via the common route before being allowed to play one character's full route, which is really nice. i feel like most games dont let you do that!
but. here is where my issue with the game begins: TAIGA ISURUGI. i chose taiga's route because he was rude and gave it to me straight and wasn't overbearing like the other li's. but then, all of a sudden, once you choose his route he goes from an asshole to an angel and that really pissed me off. he doesn't insult you AT ALLLLLL in his route. and i know how weird i sound for saying this but it has to be said, you know? like, you can't sell a character as being one way, then make him totally different in his route.
but aside from that vb is pwetty great. i really enjoyed taiga's 3rd chapter (because his 2nd one was awful) and they ended up making him an incredibly well developed character. i never choose mean li's like him so i could just be inexperienced, like, it could be normal for mean li's to be nice in their routes, but it still bugged me- if you choose another route, i'm sure it's better. and man, all of the characters are so cool and silly that you'll probably end up wanting to play all of the routes. ANYWAYS! please play vb.
